Carbs + Calories

Filed under: daily — saul @ 1:11 PM

Last friday I went to a nutritionist, I won’t bore you with the details — but the equation basically is; poor eating habits x 20 years = illness, so I changed everything about my eating habits 5 weeks ago [shortly after being diagnosed with the illness] and I was feeling pretty good about ever decisions I made - I was eating a protein packed 1000 - 1200 calories per day, I had minimal carbs, almost no sugar, no additional salt - my energy level seems good. So what the nutritioinst told me was I WASN’T EATING ENOUGH! - excuse me? isn’t overeating what got me here in the first place?

The nutritionist drafted up a 1800 calorie / 206 carb-a-day diet. I’ve got to tell you - that’s a heck of a lot of carbs, and considering I was sated by the 1200 calories, those additional 600 calories - seem like a daunting task [I will be checking the carbs / calories in a pint of Ben & Jerry’s later today] — I’m tempted to just continue my original diet, but I promised “T” that I would at least try - so this morning I ate my fill of carbs, packing in a whopping 50g and 340 calories.

The math the nutritionist used is interesting though, it’s called the mufflin equation

For men:
Resting Metabolic Rate(10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age) + 5

For women:
Resting Metabolic Rate = (10 x weight in kg) + (6.25 x height in cm) - (5 x age) - 161

If your metrically challenged, here’s how you convert pounds(lbs) to kilograms(kg) and inches(in) to centimeters(cm)

kg = pounds / 2.2
cm = inches x 2.54

man I’m full.

  1. Hi Saul-

    Thanks for stopping by my blog! I gotta say, 1,000-1,200 calories for a man does seem really low. It’s impressive that you’re not hungry all the time!

    Did your nutritionist say anything about how eatting so few calories can shut down your metabolism and actually cause you to gain weight in the long run? ‘Cause that’s the buzz I always heard.

  2. The challenge isn’t the calories, it’s the carbs - unless I eat everything in between 2 slices of bread - I can’t get near those carbs - without exceeding the calories (at least with the kinds of foods I enjoy eating)

    The nutritioninsh didn’t say anything about that.. but that’s my understanding as well.
