Old-Resene Lochmara
Now if Frank Sinatra had that nickname it’s doubtful he would have gone very far, believe it or not Resene Lochmara is a fancy-pants name for a very specific shade of blue, one of the millions of meaningless names for that specific shade of blue - my industry (the graphics industry) standardized colors years ago, but of course our clients (the unwashed and color loving masses) still refer to colors by their crayola/sherwin williams/glidden/vegetablesque/celebrity eye/M&M colors - and honestly I thought I’d heard them all - I have an endless array of email asking for a certain red to be more ‘Plum’ or for a certain blue to be a bit less ‘Sharky’ (as opposed to a blue being much too ‘Dolphin’) - GOD I WISH I WAS MAKING THIS UP -
Some of my all-time favorite color-by-association references:
- Paul Newman’s eyes
- Off-Pink
- Chevy Malibu Titanium
- Tootsie Roll Brown
- Shark Titanium / Dolphin Blue
- Flag Blue / Flag Red
- Oak
- Grape
- Chardonnay
- Pimento Orange
I’m pretty sure all the food references where given to me within an hour or two of lunchtime, I have one client who constantly references automotive paint finishes, another who has a thing for large aquatic creatures. So yesterday I was hit with - RESENE LOCHMARA, I asked for a sppelling and google did the rest, turns out that Resene is a New Zealand paint company, and they’ve gone ahead and given a whole rainbow of colors funky kiwi names - not too far from ‘Lochmara’ on the Resen color wheel live the skin-crawling ‘Jeepers-Creepers’, at least they have decent documentation as to what color is what, it was far easier than going to the market to sort through plums, or the aquarium to stare at dolphins.
So now I know that Lochmara in hex is #007EC7. In general the entire Resene color library is kind of tasty, lots of nicely muted (but clean) colors, a bit of googling I found the entire Resene library already converted into a Mac color library, complete with very wacky names (just drop it in the Library/Colors/)
