Naming Tech

Much like children and pets, items of modern technology needs a name, in order for our expensive toys to talk to each other we have to give them some type of moniker, I’ve always been amused at what people name their gear — the ones I’ve seen fell into several camps;

  • sci-fi references like crusher, piccard, and ewok.
  • geek labels like blackBox, infiniteLoop and byteSize.
  • tv references like buffy, josie and scrappy-do.
  • physical descriptions like silver_tower, sony_laptop and big_fast_dell.

IMHO naming a single computer is easy, it get’s MUCH harder when you’re trying to name a whole networks worth of computers, even a small network offers the challenge of continuity - I’ve worked on the networks named DeathStar and High-Speed Kermit, and of course each computer on those networks had to named accordingly Star Wars names (which I hated) or muppet names, after a few days the luster really wears off that.

My current network is named ‘Laguardia’ (yes it’s an airport reference), and I wish I could say I showed unique creativity, but each computer on my network is named after a famous plane or airship, I’m sure to others that’s going to seen VERY odd and highly limiting, but given my square footage boundaries and solitary work environment, it’s easily manageable, perhaps it was a little twisted to name a computer ‘Hindy’ though.

Given the chance to name them all again — I’d probably stick with names like Studio-G5 Tower and MacIntel Imac - it’s easier, but as they say hindsight is 20/20.

So what did you name your Computer/Network/Ipod?
