TekkonKinkReet

Filed under: daily — saul @ 5:52 AM

zz16796f80.jpgI’ve been watching TekkonKinkreet, it more than anything else I’ve seen this year reminds me that I have to draw MORE next year - I also may want to consider learning more than the 3 words of Japanese I know, so I can figure out what TekkonKinkreet is about.

My iPhone reports I have just over 2 billion 6 hundred thousand Unread emails, I certainly hope that’s not true.

Popular Music 2007 - WTF?

Filed under: daily — saul @ 10:13 AM

Maybe it’s just me… I flip on the radio to a top 40 station, all I hear is estrogen, lots of soft whining emotional garbage, and it all sounds the same. Why doesn’t popular music have any balls anymore…bleh!

I guess rock is dead, or dying.

IDEA: Streamlined Filetype

Filed under: geek — saul @ 6:54 AM

Brand new OS’s are cool, Leopard is pretty neat, Vista blows, but has unrealized potential, the GUI seems to get all the media focus, but functionality is really the key, I propose a simple functionality addition that IMHO will greatly improve users life, workflow, computer experience.

Proposed Functionality:

User while working in Microsoft Word clicks SAVE, dialog comes up, preferred location is chosen, filename complete with extension is typed in, the OS/Software should be aware of four things;

  1. We’ve made a preference in our to-be-saved files format
  2. That if our chosen format requires additional interaction (e.g. settings) we should be prompted to make those additional choices
  3. If the output format isn’t possible, it needs to let us know that
  4. If the outputted file [in the desired format] will no longer be editable by the host application, we’re actually asking for it to save a copy, and leave the original edittable

I can hear purists whining now, but I’m not asking for a change, I’m asking for an addition, one I feel is long overdue. Image how simple this would make media creation apps - like Photoshop/After effects/Illustrator/any damn media creation software that supports 1000’s of formats.

Now just to get Bill & Steve together for a conference call.

Recount Concluded…Buffalo New King

Filed under: daily — saul @ 12:09 PM

Just amazing video on youTube of a showdown between buffalo, lions and crocs, honestly if I had seen this in a Hollywood movie, I would have written it off as ‘unrealistic’. Just more proof that animal instinct is really amazing.

The Battle @ Kroger

(Thanks Richard, best video I’ve seen in weeks)

5 ways to not endear yourself to me

Filed under: daily — saul @ 3:03 PM

FIVE:

Refer to my computer as ‘one of those fruit computer’.

FOUR:

Mention to me that ALL Artists, Designers, Illustrators live alternate lifestyle (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

THREE:

TOUCH MY TOYS (DIE, DIE, DIE!)

TWO:

Tell me about your (enter vague relation here) is also a web designer.

ONE:

Tell a stupid joke, and then punctuate it by hitting me in the shoulder in some Cro-Magnon bonding ritual’esque way.

Unbelievably the courier who was just here, hit all 5 - I’ve never wanted to stab somebody so badly in my life, and he was just here for 4 minutes!, that has to be some sort of record.)

*unrelated - is it possible to do an ordered list in reverse order? I’m not sure?

Missed Doughty Opportunity

Filed under: daily — saul @ 8:29 AM

I’m kicking myself today - for weeks, I’ve been meaning to buy tickets to the 11/19 Mike Doughty concert @ The World Cafe, I heard about it the day it was announced, and I zoned on it..now here we are 30+ days later and of course it’s sold out, to rub salt in that wound, Mike’s releasing a new album on that very day - so I’m sure that concert would rock - I’m licking the salt out of my wounds enjoying THIS show. If you’ve never heard Mike before, and are into ‘smart lyrics’ and casual performances (meaning that its not uncommon to have Mike do five minutes on current events in the middle of a set).

NOTE: I’m 9 tracks in, and I must say THIS show is one of the best doughty show’s I’ve ever heard, it’s album quality and then some (Mike, like all decent artists, doesn’t discourage taping of his shows), download it and give a listen.

Hide Completed Items on BackPack

Filed under: daily,hacks — saul @ 4:26 PM

I’ve been using Backpack for a few months, it’s clean, fast and simple - it epitomizes the 37 signals philosophy, which I generally agree with, but they’ve made a few interface decisions that irk me. The inability to show/hide completed items is at the top of that list, luckily in Firefox it’s easy to fix;

Step one: install Stylish

Step two: add the following rule:

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document domain("YOUR BACKPACK ADDRESS") {
body.page div.done{
display: none;
}
}

5 is NOT the magic number

Filed under: daily — saul @ 4:00 AM

iTunes is really pissing me off, why? you ask (go ahead..ask) It’s simple, I have 8 assorted computers throughout the studio and the house - and although they all serve different purposes, they all have a one thing in common - they can all access a shared drive full of music legally purchased off itunes - but of course since the freekin Apple DRM is still in place, I can only play music on 5 of my machines GRRRR! - I’d love to know the rationale of that number, did a group of lawyers decide that was the maximum number of computers that the nuclear family might own, I’m so ungodly sick of de-authorizing one machine, so I can authorize another.
