Proposed Design Sisters

Filed under: minutia — saul @ 1:47 PM

Amazing some of the things you learn from looking at 10-15 years worth of client comps

In every design treatment pitch I make - there’s always at least 3 treatments, #1 is the well-manacured, tasteful option, #2 is like #1 in many ways - but spent her last two years of college abroad - #3 is the wild-child complete with some trampy and slutty tendencies, none of the sisters are bad choices, it really depends on how adventurous a client is feeling.

This just happened…

me: I can write a script that will update your dashboard 100 times a day.
client: NO! That’s just not often enough!
me: Okay how about I update it every 15 minutes.
client: perfect.

Verbiage Clarification

Filed under: minutia — saul @ 10:06 AM

To the somewhat rude lady @ the WAWA on Bristol road who feels her ability to spawn gives her some kind of built in preferential parking permit- I’m not CHILD -LESS, I’m CHILD -FREE, which like sugarFREE, fatFREE, and ‘FREE like in Beer’ - is a choice, not an affliction, so enjoy your screaming, fussing, ugly child for the next 18 years or so, oh and NICE parenting, locking your infant in the car while you go buy cigarettes and chocolate milk is inspired.

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE:

if you enjoy the acerbic nature of THIS post, you really must read some of my vintage content

Most Significant Song Number 10

I have a dear friend who has the most amazing ear for music, she can name, artist and title of practically any song recording in the last 30 years after just hearing the first few seconds - she’s scary accurate. She knows a LOT about music, who was in what band, who wrote what etc.. You can lose hours on the topic with her, and I often do.

For a non-musician I spend a lot of time talking and thinking about music. Yesterday I went to a few meetings and I still had my ipod clipped to my shirt, and inevitably I was asked me what kind of music I liked, what I was listening too, both very typical questions (since wearing an ipod in public is ‘code’ for ‘walk right up to me and ask me about the kind music I listen too’)

Simple and Useable

tempest Simple and Useable
The title of this post is Simple and Useable, two thing that I strive for in most every project, but it’s hard, Clients seem to want complex and involved, which is fine, but to meld that with good design is time consuming, and clients are generally thrifty. This week has been a particularly bad one for complexity - I spent hours in a meeting listening to a application flow that was needlessly complex, and client was under the assumption that a UI redesign would make it more useable, which I suppose could be true, but the workflow is really the issue - Read More »

My Cat Ate My Old Blog

Filed under: minutia — saul @ 1:05 PM

So this is the second incarnation of this blog, I had a MINOR wordpress upgrading issue - long story short, this is a new blog; it’s a lot like the old blog, hopefully you read the old-blog (well, viewed is probably a better verb, since I tend to post more pictures than words… anyway I’m rambling) If you’re new here, HI. Enjoy the blog.
