Yet More Comcast Pain

Filed under: daily, rant — saul @ 4:26 PM

So after all the drama, the complaints, the satisfaction, the shirts - we’re straight back to complaint - seems I no longer get hi-def channels on my upstairs TV, at least on one of the two Cable Cards, because it was checked  before they left, but obviously NOT that well. More on this after my call to comcast in the morning.

Comcast connection woes

Filed under: daily, geek, rant — saul @ 8:07 AM

So stop me if you’ve heard this one before, Everynight at 5:45 — 6:30 my Comcast Broadband internet connection drops, it doesn’t just drop a little, it doesn’t just drop now and then – it drops to 0kbps [I suppose it doesn’t matter what unit of measure I use to communicate zero does it], it drops everyday - after a handful of laughable calls to tech support [unplug modem, reset router, die a little more inside] and troubleshooting on my own I’m fairly certain the issue is twofold:

  1. The splitter in my backyard is dead/dying, this isn’t a difficult assumption because it’s been replaced 6 times in 2 years [more on this later]
  2. The added traffic/strain of everyone on my block surfing online, talking on the phone and
watching TV diminishes my already splittered-weakened signal to a whisper

Reach out and tweet someone

I’ve been twittering with a gentleman named frank [@comcastcares] who works for customer relations for Comcast, he has a thankless job - he’s basically doing damage control to the twittering community - but the interesting side effect of following frank on twitter is that I can read the issues everyone else is having - and my issue is fairly typical, lots of folks with a near identical problem. That being the case, you would think Comcast would have some type of handle on the issue, or at the very least their techs would acknowledge it.

IMHO if Comcast would public admit they have a problem would be an excellent first step, but to help them along I may print a few 1000 [unplug modem, reset router, die a little more inside] t-shirts, let me know what size you need.

My Spin on the Underlying problem

This is purely conjecture, but 800lb Gorilla Comcast has been pushing their ‘triple pack’ very hard in the northeast, it’s success is putting additional strain on their network, and that strain is exposing flaws in the coaxial/splitter networking that’s been in most of their customers homes for 15 years - how do they react, they announce a ‘wiring protection plan’ only $3.95 a month - and pimp it heavy on every tech call - lovely, aren’t I already paying for service I’m not getting? Wasn’t it your technicians who originally wired this crap originally? Isn’t my/our continued patronage worth 50 feet of coaxial and a two dollar splitter? Needless to say, Hearing service plan offers when I’m not getting service is not an effective sales technique, at least on me.

Possible Solutions

Obviously the first thing that comes to mind as a solution is switch providers, FIOS is readily available in my area, and the pricing even without bundles is fairly competitive. I could just go to Radio Shack and buy myself a handful of splitters, and replace them one by one as needed, Honestly they are $1.49 this is costing me 1000 times that in lost productivity and found aggravation.

I think it’s significant to mention that I have chosen to use what little bandwidth I currently have to write this post, so are you having issues with Comcast and your broadband connection? let me hear about it.

Weight loss and Society

Filed under: rant — saul @ 10:49 PM

So about 11 months ago I changed most everything about my life - I went from eating like a college student (I’m 42) and getting zero exercise (actually is there anything less than zero) to eating healthier, and regularly going to the gym, honestly nothing earth shattering, and certainly nothing we didn’t learn about in high school health class, and as of today, I’ve officially lost 67lbs. So Jared with your fancy sandwiches and your corporate sponsor SUCK IT. I figure I have about 20(ish) more pounds to lose, but already I’m at the point where most people who haven’t seen me in the last year, just don’t recognize me, which I must admit is pretty entertaining.

The aggravating part of it all is this - since the weight loss, people (mostly strangers) respond to me differently, when I was super-sized people treated me like some type of leper, now that I’m a more socially acceptable size, I get treated in a much more friendly manor, I thought I was imagining it, but my wife absolutely agrees (she’s looking mighty fine herself these days). But wait, it gets worse, I know it’s none of my business what other people do with their lives, but when I see someone basically putting poison in their mouth, I want to go and knock their tacobellburgerkingmcmuffin with cheese to the ground, and get them a banana, honestly I feel terrible about that - as of yet it hasn’t happened.

Also if the manufacturers of the following products; Grape nuts, Dole Bananas, Dannon Yogurt, Whole Foods Market, Planet Fitness, would like a spokesperson, call my people.

In Memory of Instant Photography

Filed under: photos, rant — saul @ 10:05 AM

polaroid.jpgI wasn’t surprised by the announcement that Polaroid was ceasing production of instant film, instant film is just one of latest digital photography victims, don’t get me wrong I love digital photography, but it’s not without it’s downside.

  • The art of making prints is all but lost.
  • Now EVERYONE is a photographer
  • Cell phones cameras are everywhere - privacy is non-existent
  • People learned the word ‘MEGA-PIXELS’

Pictured above are my (left to right); Kodak Kodamatic Champ, Polaroid OneStep CloseUp and my Polaroid SX-70 Land Camera (with sonar) just 3 of the notable 5 instant cameras I have - no doubt film will still be available, just at a premium price.

Holey Moley

Filed under: rant, vintage — saul @ 9:18 AM

I stopped in a Bagel Joint** for lunch the other day, it was a bit late and they appeared like they may have been preparing to close. I politely asked ‘yaopenstill?’ [it’s all one word, cause that’s pretty much how I said it] the counter gal who was busily jamming dozens of bagels into a clear plastic bag, confirmed that they where still open but that they didn’t have many bagels left. I asked what kind of bagels they had left, she told me that my bagel options consisted of ‘cranberry orange’ and ‘cinnamon raisin’…

Now mind you that although my mother is cuban, I’m 100% Jewish, to me neither of these options qualify to be called bagels, at best ‘cranberry orange’ and ‘cinnamon raisin’ bagels are hi-carb candy, or at the very least they’re poorly shaped muffins, either way, they both suck for lunch. While grasping for a comment, my eyes once again fell on the now full bag of bagels on the counter.

The goggles do nothing

Filed under: rant, vintage — saul @ 1:28 PM

Well, as I often do, I found myself at IKEA again today, but not my normal IKEA, but a brand spanking new one, 6 miles closer to my house. It was crowded, I was alone, it was raining, a recipe for disaster to be certain.

So while shopping, I noticed, this was NOT the typical ‘flesh’ show that I was used to, 20 something females in inappropriatly short tight and revealing garb, showing off tanned, toned and chiseled flesh, no this was 30, and sometimes 40 somthings showing me… Truth be told there are no words for what they where showing.

So it got me thinking, Do these women not own a mirror? or perhaps they think they look good? you would think that their tattoo artist Read More »

Omit

Filed under: rant, vintage — saul @ 1:38 PM

Funny, my previous post was a bit more ‘sadistic’, and I’ve gotten several comments that folks miss the more acerbic saul, the meaner saul, the saul that makes unsuspecting salesmen and ignorant cashiers cry.. well for ya’ll… this post is for you.

My phone has been ringing off the hook today, it’s mostly project related, but as I was drinking my loc-cal, low-carb, high-fiber, low-fat, high-fructose, medium-sodium partially homogonized somewhat carbonized coffee beverage, the phone rang, my caller-id let me know the call was from those oh-so helpful people at ‘WindowWizards’, usually I would ignore such a blatant sales call, but I happen to be in the market for replacement windows, so I picked the call up.
